Demand for Solvent Alternatives Driven by Concerns About Availability, Regulations

Solvent users big and small across the U.S. are finding toluene and xylene alternatives to be a viable option for their day-to-day operations, due largely to changing legal requirements.

Federal regulations often require monitoring of exposure levels of certain solvents like xylene and toluene, while more and more states are making it difficult to obtain these solvents. Between the increasing levels of paperwork on the federal level and the decreasing availability on a state-by-state level, many companies are simply foregoing the use of these solvents altogether in favor of less-regulated alternative solvents.

Examples of such firms include:

  • A large manufacturer who was starting the production of a new laminated product and needed to avoid availability and regulation issues.
  • A testing laboratory that was using toluene to determine the percentage of petroleum oil present in mixtures of oil, water and solid debris coming from shale-sand oil fields.
  • A manufacturer of a tar-mixture that makes road strips "stickier" for better tire traction.
  • Stamp collectors who need to remove the adhesive from stamps.
  • Art and textile studios that need to dilute and/or remove paints, acrylics and dyes.

Although alternative solvents are usually somewhat more expensive, companies are increasingly willing to pay the incremental price to avoid onerous record-keeping requirements and/or availability concerns.
